Approximately 17 years ago (1993) we arrived in North Carolina from Kathmandu – Nepal where my husband worked for The World Health Organization. I served as the Chairperson for The Library of the American Women’s Organization of Nepal. I also worked for Quantas Airlines. The library was my main passion then…

Upon arriving in the US, we decided to settle in North Carolina and pursue a completely different life-style by re-establishing some roots at home rather than being globetrotters; dragging suitcases through airports hither and yon. Hence one year later, Barouke – The Woodcrafters Gallery (est.1994) was born. I guess my passion for establishing this type of business grew out of the fact that my dad (who was deceased when I was three years old) was an avid designer and maker of classic contemporary style furniture. Some might say his style was more Baroque—smooth, hand carved (although not ornate) flowing lines.

However, today Barouke carries smaller handcrafted wooden accent tables, lamps, mirrors, clocks and so many other artsy items. We support and mentor mainly American craftsmen, as well as carefully selected woodcrafters around the globe. We believe that if someone takes the time to carefully produce a work of art then that work deserves recognition regardless of where the artist is from. I was born and raised in Jamaica…
